516 ARTS presented a very special benefit concert with the renowned singer Rufus Wainwright, performing solo at the KiMo Theatre on Friday, November 11 at 8pm, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the nonprofit 516 ARTS. Praised by the New York Times for his “genuine originality,” Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation. The Grammy-nominated singer songwriter has released seven studio albums, three DVDs, and three live albums. Musically he has collaborated with artists including Elton John, David Byrne, Boy George, Joni Mitchell, Pet Shop Boys and producer Mark Ronson among others. In addition to being a celebrated contemporary pop singer, Rufus has made a name for himself in the classical world composing operas, and he has distinguished himself by playing original orchestrated pop songs and pieces from an extensive classical repertoire with well-respected opera singers and orchestras around the world.

The evening began with an art reception for Timothy Cummings: The Concert, presented by 516 ARTS in the KiMo Theatre Gallery. Albuquerque artist Timothy Cummings painted a portrait of the Grammy-nominated musician Rufus Wainwright as a theatrical Elizabethan character for his new album titled Take All My Loves: 9 Shakespearian Sonnets. A longtime friend of Wainwright, Cummings teamed up with 516 ARTS to invite him to Albuquerque to do a benefit concert celebrating the 10th anniversary of 516 ARTS.

There was a post-concert reception with Rufus Wainwright at 516 ARTS (for tickets holders $75 & up, event sponsors). Help support 516 ARTS, Downtown Albuquerque’s flagship contemporary arts venue, which turned ten years old in 2016. Ten years of producing ground-breaking, world-class art exhibitions and cultural happenings. Ten years of putting Albuquerque on the map as a globally connected hub of creative experimentation and dialogue. Ten years of anchoring arts and culture in Downtown revitalization.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at this very special benefit concert! Click here to see a short video about our 10th anniversary.
