Albuquerque artist Timothy Cummings painted a portrait of the Grammy-nominated musician Rufus Wainwright as a theatrical Elizabethan character for his new album titled Take All My Loves: 9 Shakespearian Sonnets. A longtime friend of Wainwright, Cummings teamed up with 516 ARTS to invite him to Albuquerque to do a benefit concert celebrating the 10th anniversary of 516 ARTS.
The exhibition included a limited edition lithograph created by Cummings at Tamarind Institute to benefit 516 ARTS, which was be available to 516 ARTS donors.
Timothy Cummings was born and raised in Albuquerque, but made his career as an artist during the past two decades living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. The self-taught painter moved back to Albuquerque in 2014. He grew up in the midst of Spanish Catholic and Native American culture, fertile with religious imagery and iconography of the churches, and was influenced by murals and retablos depicting death, martyrdom and Day of the Dead imagery. His dream-like, figurative paintings, which are filled with a myriad of detail and discovery, address the issue of youthful turmoil – of that awkward moment between childhood and adulthood, exploring identity and gender. Inspired by Renaissance paintings as well as by primitive art, Cummings’ works transport the viewer from this world into a world of transformation where anything is possible.
Cummings’ work has been exhibited throughout the United States at LACE Gallery (Los Angeles, CA); the Laguna Art Museum (Laguna Beach, CA); the Hunterdon Art Museum (Clinton, New Jersey); and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco, CA). In 2013, Cummings was an artist-in-residence and subject of a solo exhibition at Transarte Institute in São Paulo, Brazil. His work is represented in the permanent collection of Di Rosa Gallery in Napa, California and in the personal collection of Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson, owners of the 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky. Cummings’ exhibitions have been reviewed in the San Francisco Examiner, Artweek, Art Papers, Flash Art and Details. He has had numerous solo exhibitions at Nancy Hoffman Gallery in New York and at Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco, both of which represent his work.
