The public was invited to Out of the Underground, the 13th annual juried graduate exhibition presented by Graduate Art Association of the UNM Department of Art and Art History as a two-part exhibition. For the first time, the Graduate Art Association held its annual graduate art exhibition in two venues: at its traditional home in the Jonson Gallery on the UNM campus, as well as in the newly renovated 516 ARTS space in Downtown Albuquerque. Engaged in one of the most the rigorous and highly respected art programs in the United States, UNM’s graduate students produce some of the most original and challenging work in New Mexico. The exhibition at both sites was juried by Laura Steward Heon, Director & Curator of SITE Santa Fe.

The three prize recipients in this year’s exhibition were: ceramic artist Jennifer Van Horn (the Ana Mendieta Prize), graphic artist and painter Larry Bob Phillips (the Florence Henri Prize), and photographer and videographer Joseph Mougel (the Friends of Art Prize). Jennifer Van Horn and Larry Bob Phillips exhibited and presented their gallery talks at the Jonson Gallery, while Joseph Mougel’s work was on view at 516 ARTS, where his talk was also held.
