Join Albuquerque Museum Curator of Art Josie Lopez, PhD for a talk on Toussaint Lu2019Ouverture, a series of work by the artist Jacob Lawrence (b. 1917 Atlantic City, d. 2000 Seattle). The series chronicles Toussaintu2019s exploits in commanding the slave revolt that led to Haitiu2019s emancipation from European rule in 1804, thereby establishing the first Black republic in the Western Hemisphere. It is the first extended series in which Lawrence tackled heroic stories and themes through a striking style of elemental forms and expressive colors. Lopez, former Visiting Curator at 516 ARTS, holds a BA in History and MA in Teaching from Brown University, and MA in Art History from UNM, and a PhD from UC Berkeley.
