Everyone is invited to celebrate the opening of Dust Specks on the Sea: Contemporary Sculpture from the French Caribbean & Haiti, presented by 516 ARTS and Hunter East Harlem Gallery. Curated by Arden Sherman with Marie Vickles and Katie Hood Morgan, the exhibition was developed at Hunter East Harlem Gallery and features sculptural works by 27 artists from Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, and Haiti. It presents various approaches to subject matter, materials, and process that speak to contemporary practices by artists of this region, evincing their participation in a globalized art world and putting pressure on who is at its u201ccenteru201d and who is on its u201cperiphery.u201d The online talk and in-person open house at 516 ARTS include visiting artists Ronald Cyrille aka B. Bird (Guadeloupe), Julie Bessard (Martinique) and Adler Guerrier (Haiti/Miami) and curators Arden Sherman (New York), and Katie Hood Morgan (California).
