The (Tense) Present: New Works by Neal Ambrose-Smith, curated by Suzanne Newman Fricke, PhD, features work that combines a range of imagery and media to create a complex reflection on current events. Ambrose-Smithu2019s work references specific current events u2013 including climate change, the current political situation, and COVID-19 u2013 with cartoon cats, Marvin the Martian, Alice in Wonderland, Star Trek, and Joan Miru00f3. A descendant of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation of Montana, his work often includes elements surrounding Indigenous knowledge. In Neal Ambrose-Smithu2019s visions, the present is overlaid with images from the past since we can only understand where we now are by understanding our cultural influences.

Afton Love: Perfect Union explores geology, particularly how rocks are created and transformed on the earthu2019s surface. Describing sedimentary rocks as fragile bodies that constantly lose their layers due to constant friction and interaction with the environment, Love states, u201cWe cannot access the interior of things or people, only the thin layer of surface that covers them where a limited portion of reality is manifested. The stone is a metaphor for our planet and ourselves.u201d
